SAN ANTONIO -- One robbery suspect caused quite a commotion for the San Antonio Police Department Monday night.
Police say it all started around 7:20 p.m. at the Broadway Convenient Shop in the 1000 block of E. Mulberry, near Broadway. A man armed with a silver handgun came into the store and demanded money from the cashier, but when she told him she couldn't understand him, he decided to take matters into his own hands.
The suspect jumped over the counter, grabbed the money from the register and demanded the cashier give her car keys to him. The cashier told the suspect that her keys were in the back of the store; while he was retrieving the keys, the cashier and another employee managed to get out of the store and lock the susepct inside.
Three detectives in the area made the scene, but before they could get to the suspect, he had already escaped the store by breaking a window.
A few minutes later, one of the detectives caught up with the suspect and ordered him to stop, but instead of doing so, the suspect tried to grab the detective's weapon from his hand, causing the weapon to discharge. No one was injured in the shooting, and the suspect continued to flee from authorities.
During the suspect's run on the streets, he came across a pedstrian and stole the pedestrian's cell phone. Suspect then ran into Van's Restaurant in the 3400 block of Broadway and made his way onto the roof of the restaurant. Before officers could get to him, he took off from the roof and went into nearby restaurant, Kings Palace Chinese Restaurant.
While inside, the suspect tried to grab a customer's keys and wallet, but he picked the wrong customer. The customer told police he tackled the suspect to the ground and held him there until officers showed up.
The suspect has not been identified at this time. Police believe the suspect might have been on drugs. He is facing two counts of aggravated robbery.
