It seems these days there is a pill for everything, but with that modern convenience comes a hefty price tag. So how do we cut our prescription cost without sacrificing our health?

"It comes down to where are you having these [prescriptions] filled, and are you getting the best deal," says Angie Hicks, founder of Angies List, a consumer resource website and magazine.

And with medicines, she says it pays to shop around.

"[Shop] across different pharmacies, because people can get different rates depending on the pharmacy."

And whether it's a big box store, a grocery store or even your neighborhood pharmacy, don't be afraid to ask about discounts.

"A lot of insurance companies have opportunities where you can buy multiple months at a lower price than if you're buying them one month at a time," Hicks says.

And here's the secret for getting the deal we all love: free!

"Don't be afraid to ask about samples of the drug," Hicks says. "One member was telling me she got a couple of months of prenatal vitamins from her OB when they got samples, and it saved her money at the pharmacy."

And last but not least, Angie says sometimes it pays off to learn to say no.

"Are there, for example, ways you can improve your health without using prescription drugs, changing diet, changing exercise routines?" Hicks asks. "And then if it's really necessary for the drugs, are there generic options available?"

The end result could be a healthier bottom line for both you and your budget.
