Here in San Antonio and all across Texas, police are preparing to launch a massive crackdown on drunk drivers.

They expect things will be busy for them on the road. And now, officers have a new tool in the fight against DWI.

It seems like every time we have one of these busy weekends, Bexar County enacts a "no-refusal" policy.

Essentially, if a driver is pulled over on suspicion of DWI, the process to get blood drawn is much quicker, and this weekend will be no different.

The crackdown on drunk driving began in earnest Thursday night and will continue through the weekend.

On Friday morning, KENS 5 rode along with SAPD on a DWI patrol, and officers found more than a few suspected drunk drivers.

While some states use checkpoints on busy weekends to target drunk drivers, the Texas Supreme Court has ruled such methods are unconstitutional.

Therefore, the best tool for officers is a "no-refusal" policy from the DA's office.

"When you think about how many hundreds of thousands of vehicles are in the city, we're not even scratching the surface," said Anthony Bancroft of the San Antonio Police Department. "We hope it is the fear of getting caught that stops people from getting behind the wheel of a 2,000-pound bomb."
