You can expect to see extra cops through labor day on the interstate especially in the city of Schertz. The city has new grant money for patrols, after a survey showed only 32 percent of drivers obey the speed limit while passing through.
Schertz Police Corporeal A.J. Arriaga hits the road in pursuit of unsafe motorists. "The message is to slow everybody down to make everyone aware to be safer on the roadways" says Corporeal Arriaga.
First stop, the busy highway artery mile marker 177 on IH-35. "I'm also looking for somebody speeding by also the aggressive whose going to be flying and come up on people driving the speed limit," says Corporeal Arriaga. Within minutes of parking his patrol car along the interstate, Arriaga spotted a gray sedan speeding 83-mph. He pulled over Janelle Clark. Clark, along with her two young children, were on their way to Fort Worth. Clarks said she was only speeding to catch up with traffic since she has a four hour trip ahead of her, but now she is returning home with a speeding ticket. "I understand he's doing his job and I totally respect it," says Clark.
Just down the interstate at mile marker 181, the Corporeal found his second speeder of the day who also clocked in 83-mph. Corporeal Arriaga hopes with this extra law enforcement presence especially during the Labor Day holiday it will cut down on reckless drivers and keep the rest of the motorists safe. "That's why these speed waves are done, so we can be visible to get the word out and the message out," says Corporeal Arriaga.
The Texas Department of Transportation is joining forces with law enforcement statewide to launch an end-of-summer Campaign, called “Drink. Drive. Go to jail,” designed to keep drunk drivers off our roads. The enforcement component of the campaign begins August 20t and runs through Labor Day (September 6th). For the next two weeks, there will be increased law enforcement on Texas roads. Officers will be working overtime to find and arrest impaired drivers.
