After a 17 years of searching and a lengthy extradition process, a man accused in a brutal shooting is back in the hands of U.S. authorities.

Jose Isaac de la Fuente Garcia, 69, was flown to Houston from Mexico Thursday morning and arrived at the F.B.I. building in San Antonio later in the day. He's been booked into the Kerr County Jail.

De la Fuente told camera crews he was innocent and that another man is to blame for the murder of his estranged wife, 37-year-old Mirella De La Fuente.

According to reports, on the evening of March 2, 1991, witnesses saw Jose run his wife's car off the road. Police say he pointed a semi-automatic 22-caliber rifle at her and opened fire, hitting Mirella several times, including twice in the head.

A month later, Jose was indicted for murder, but by then, officials believed he had already fled to Mexico.

In December 2008, he was arrested in Montemorelos, Mexico. Investigators say locating Jose was a group effort.

In addition to murder, the suspect also faces federal charges for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.
