A nonprofit animal rights group filed suit last week against the zoo claiming the elephant's treatment violates federal laws. Lucky is the only elephant at the zoo.

For the second straight year, the San Antonio Zoo tops the "In Defense of Animals"  list of Ten Worst Zoos for Elephants .

The group criticizes the zoo for keeping Lucky the elephant in solitary confinement for more than two years.

They argue that elephants need room to roam, and in nature 'traverse enormous home ranges measuring hundreds of square miles," whereas at the SA Zoo Lucky is confined to half an acre.

IDA also pointed out that elephants are highly social animals, making Lucky's situation the more unbearable. They said even adding another elephant would be 'inadequate' to meet the animal's needs.

They say the zoo should retire the animal, who has spent the last 47 years of her life on display.

IDA suggest greener pastures for Lucky might be one of the two U.S. sanctuaries that have the acreage necessary for a superior quality of life.

This is the sixth year IDA has put out the Worst Zoos list
