They're looking up so that Down syndrome doesn't get them down.

A special dance was performed over the weekend by girls living with Down syndrome.

Mariachis played while the dancers moved to the music.

Sunday was Down Syndrome Awareness Day.

It's one of the most commonly occurring genetic disorders, currently affecting more than 350,000 people in the United States alone.

"People with Down syndrome are just like you and I," said Barbara Spinner, whose granddaughter has Down syndrome. "We need to accept them in community. The more we do that, the more their gifts will show."

The participants included the Down Syndrome Association of San Antonio, Eva's Heroes, Gordon Hartman and others.
