SAN ANTONIO -- A 24-year-old woman in Frio County has been arrested and charged with injury to a child.

Child Protective Services picked up Irene Contreras at the CPS office in Pearsall Wednesday morning.

The 18-month old child is in critical condition.

On Tuesday night we reported that the 18-month-old has broken ribs, missing toe nails and signs of sexual abuse. The infant went to Christus Santa Rosa Hospital.

Pearsall police say they were not prepared for what they saw.  "Just when you think you've seen the worst,"  said Chief Henry Martinez of the Pearsall Police Department.  "Poor defenseless toddler. No way to prepare for it," he added. He says the child has cauliflower ear and had been sexually assaulted.

This weekend the child was brought to Frio Regional Hospital where the staff immediately alerted police and had the infant rushed to Christus Santa Rosa in San Antonio.  Authorities plan to question everyone, including the mother.

Because the injuries show different stages of healing, police suspect the abuse took place over time.

Four other children were removed from the home by CPS and placed in foster care.
