There are holidays enough in San Antonio. With the Fourth of July right around the corner, how about taking this weekend to celebrate -- just because it’s the weekend. There are always new events popping up around town, and this weekend is no exception.
Great American Backyard Campout
Has your family been camping this summer? Or ever? On Saturday, June 23, spend a night under the stars as a part of the Nation Wildlife Federation’s (NWF) campaign to give your family the first step into a lifetime filled with healthy, outdoor fun. Register online to join in the fun without leaving your backyard. You can join up with other groups or keep the camping within the family. Embedded in the program is an option to financially support the NWF. Set up camp in the backyard on Saturday –- or even in your living room –- for a fun adventure in a familiar place.
The San Antonio Botanical Gardens hosts a class on Saturday, June 23 from 9 a.m. to noon. Parents can learn about designing and planting an exploratory play garden while the kids have fun planting seeds and doing crafts at the morning workshop. Exploring Mother Nature is important at any age, but especially for kids. Research shows there’s tremendous benefit playing in dirt. Give them the tools they need to navigate the great outdoors with help from the experts at the Botanical Gardens. Cost is $30 for one adult and one child. Registration is available online!
Get even more out of the great outdoors at the Cibolo Nature Center on Saturday, June 23. Enjoy live music and dancing among the trees at this family-oriented concert at the outdoor stage. Bring a picnic, the dog and the kids. Everybody can enjoy the evening air from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. See the C-Rock Band perform, all while supporting the nature education and outreach programs at the non-profit Cibolo Nature Center. Tickets are $7.50 for members, $10 for non-members, $5 for 65 and older and free for kids 12 and under.
Sunday, June 24th, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., experience the new exhibition Radcliffe Bailey: Memory as Medicine with your family at the McNay. Create art out of found-objects, make collages, groove to the blues with a dance workshop, listen to a storyteller and take family tours of the museum at 1:30, 2:30, or 3:30 p.m. Enjoy the beauty of art and the beautiful grounds of the McNay with your family, and maybe even learn something new along the way.
