SAN ANTONIO -- A Kansas man is in trouble with the law, accused of horse abuse.
The man's tractor trailer reportedly broke down on Wednesday. But on Thursday a good Samaritan took notice of the horses inside the trailer. They appeared to be in terrible shape, so the person called Animal Care Services (ACS) and 911.
Early reports say the horses had nothing to eat or drink for at least eight hours before help arrived. The truck was vented, but authorities say the temps inside the trailer must have been between 130 to 140 degrees.
Two of the horses died and five others were discovered in serious distress and severely malnourished.
For now, the surviving horses are in the care of ACS and Horse Rescue.
The 41-year-old owner says the horses were purchased in Eagle Pass and were being transported to Kansas when the trouble occurred.
He was arrested on suspicion of Cruelty to Livestock.
