Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 1, the downtown Christus Santa Rosa Hospital will discontinue adult patient care and accept only children, city officials say.
The Bexar County judge wants to assure San Antonio residents that there will be no disruption in ER services because other area hospitals will be stepping in to take the adult patients.
The San Antonio Fire Department’s EMS division says their response time will not be affected. They will just be delivering adult patients to different hospitals.
“The thing that will impact us is that we may have further travel times once we pick a patient up and we won’t have that facility right downtown,” said SAFD Chief Charles Hood.
Officials say that the Baptist, Methodist and NIX hospitals are all prepared to handle the increase in patients with future investments and expansions to pick up the slack for downtown emergency care.
The only foreseeable problem may be for adult patients who show up to Santa Rosa Hospital and are not aware of the new policy.
