When a San Antonio man's brakes went out as he was driving through a residential neighborhood he had to think fast.
The driver says it all came down to the split second decision that may have ended up saving his life: He crashed into a motel.
Around 1:30 Friday afternoon, first responders were called to the Capital Motel near South Flores and East Bonner Road.
That's where Michael Contreras told rescue workers that he fought to control his late model pickup truck for several minutes before crashing into the building. He said he knew he had to make a move in order to avoid hurting himself or someone else.
Pieces of the fence plunged through his windshield, but a shaken Contreras made it to safety.
"I'm just really thankful," said Contreras.
Contreras had a banged up knee and arm, but is expected to fully recover.
