SAN ANTONIO - A deadly house fire ignited by a car crash neighbors said punctuates what's been a dangerous section of road for years.
Early Sunday morning, at the intersection of Timberhill Drive and Valley Brook Rd, a driver lost control of his Ford Mustang, jumped two curbs, and slammed into a home setting it on fire.
The driver, who has yet to be identified, and the man inside the home, 88-year-old John Cardenas, were killed.
Such a freak accident as this, neighbors said, could not be predicted but looking back many added the warnings signs were there.
Neighbor Dave White has had his mailbox taken out twice by passing cars. He said just about everyone along his street has.
"Oh no, it's not uncommon,” he said adding the house across the street had its carport taken out by a vehicle last year.
The city has installed speed bumps along Timberhill Drive, but neighbors said they haven’t helped.
“You can’t control people that are going to break the law,” said Don Nettleton. “They just don’t care how fast they go.”
Even the Cardenas family was well aware of the problems.
John Cardenas’ mailbox had been knocked over by cars on three different occasions before his son surrounded it with cinder blocks and cemented the mailbox into the ground.
His son said it’s the type of project he only wishes now he could have built around his father’s home.
