SAN ANTONIO — A local not-for-profit is reeling after thousands of dollars worth of cowboy boots were stolen.
Amber Higgs is co-founder of Upward Transitions Therapeutic Horsemanship in Helotes. She also serves as executive director.
The not-for-profit believes in healing through horses. They work with wounded warriors and people with physical, emotional and mental challenges through horse-related programs.
The charity had its Healing Through Horses Gala this weekend and borrowed brand new Twisted X Boots from Billy's Western Wear to use as centerpieces on their tables.
On Monday morning, Higgs went for a walk at the Leon Creek Greenway near Loop 1604 and I-10. She returned to her SUV to find the window smashed and the suitcase of boots missing.
"They took an expensive backpack of mine with my wallet, gift cards and all kinds of other baby paraphernalia," Higgs said. "Just please return the boots. They're worthless."
She said they're worthless because there's not a complete pair of boots in the suitcase. The group used only the left boot of each pair.
Greg White, general manager of Billy's Western Wear, said he estimates the loss at about $6,000.
"It just makes you feel crushed that you go out of your way to help kids with disabilities and someone would break into the car and someone would steal these boots that didn't even belong to Upward Transitions," White said.
