There’s no doubt the Super Bowl is one of the biggest sporting events in America. And the larger the event, the more money being gambled.
But not all bets are friendly.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office served a warrant Monday morning at a west-side produce store in the 700 block of Old Highway 90. However, detectives said they found more than just fruits and vegetables.
Investigators said they found all the signs of an illegal gambling ring. From stamps to tickets and $10,000 in cash, detectives said they even confiscated several guns, one of which was stolen.
“When the major events come around the major activity increases and that gives us a better chance at surveillance and I won’t tell you how many people bought tickets, but it was a large number,” said Lieutenant Darrell Sanders of the BCSO vice unit.
Sanders said even though the money, paraphernalia and weapons are off the street, it’s only a small dent, and the battle against illegal gambling in San Antonio is far from over.
“We'll get them one at a time as we can, but I don’t think we can stop gambling in San Antonio,” Sanders said.
Sanders said no one was arrested Monday, but that’s only so the District Attorney’s office can review the case. Sanders said the suspects could face charges of money laundering, promotion of gambling and even organized crime.
