What would you do if a hurricane hit? Would you be ready?
The Texas Department of Health Services hopes so. But if you aren't, the agency says it is not to late, or too difficult to prepare.
They have set out to educate people, just in case a bit storm heads our way.
In case you have to evacuate, having copies of your IDs, medical records, and insurance document is critical they say. Here are some of their suggestions:
- Make a family disaster plan with established escape routes and a plan on how to communicate with each other;
- Keep copies of your important documents in a waterproof bag. Also keep copies of important documents in a safe place away from your home, and consider copying:
-List of medications
-Insurance policies
-Driver's license, passport or photo ID
-Bank account information
-Credit card information
-Financial records
-Inventory of home possessions
- Prepare a disaster supplies kit and store in an air-tight, portable container(s). Periodically replace expired batteries and food.
- Pack enough food and water for three days. Each person requires a gallon of H2O per day.
- Put together a first aid kit with sterile gloves, sterile gauze, soap, antibiotic towelettes, medications, bandages, burn ointment;
- Gather emergency items like battery-powered radio, flashlights, extra batteries, whistle, shovel, basic tools, baby wipes, garbage bags, toilet paper and a state map; cash and travelers checks.
