SAN ANTONIO -- The South Texas Chapter of the American Red Cross is sending volunteers east to help with relief efforts following Hurricane Issac.

Trucks are being loaded with food, water, medical supplies, and cleaning kits.

South Texas volunteer emergency response teams pulled out of the downtown location on East Houston Street around 2:00 p.m. Wednesday.

The teams are scheduled to stop first in Lufkin, Texas where they will stock up on supplies.

From there, the caravans will join other Red Cross team members who are staging in Orange, Texas, near the Louisiana border.

Due to the large scale of this disaster, volunteers are prepared to stay in the Louisiana area for three weeks.

There are a number of families who need assistance, and the Red Cross needs more support. Those who would like to help out should call 1-800-RED CROSS.
