HOUSTON – The National Hurricane Center said Friday morning a small disturbance in the southern Gulf of Mexico has a 70-percent chance of becoming a tropical storm.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said it would send its hurricane hunting aircraft to the gulf to check out the disturbance.

Should the cluster of thunderstorms continue to develop, it could become Tropical Storm Helene.

Some models suggest the storm would go into Mexico, but other models have it hugging the coast and heading north into Texas.

It’s a disturbance everyone in Texas will want to keep an eye on through the weekend, Paul said.

If the system does head north, it would likely bring rain to the Houston area by the middle of next week.
