SeaWorld San Antonio's Rescue Team assisted in rescuing more than 100 green sea turtles last week from Padre Island National Seashore area, the company announced Thursday.
The rescue team, along with the National Park Service and other marine animal rescue organizations, returned the sea turtles to the Gulf of Mexico.
The turtles had become "cold stunned," Sea World said, meaning that they had become hypothermic due to the frigid water temperatures around the island.
When the water temperature drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the sea turtles lose the ability to swim, which puts them at risk for boat strikes and drowning.
SeaWorld says that the rescue teams had to act quickly; otherwise, the turtles would've succumbed to the elements.
