KENS 5 sat down with Woodlawn Theatre's Sherry Wehner to talk about some of the most talented actors in San Antonio who show their talent to the public at summer camp. The Woodlawn Theatre's program teaches youths everything about musicals from the performance to costume design.

How long has Woodlawn Theatre been around?
The Woodlawn Theatre has been around a long time and started as a movie theater.  In recent years various theater companies have worked out of the theater.

We started Pennington Productions in Jan of 2011 with Jonathan Pennington who had been working out of the theater under a different production company for a few years.  The youth program is my passion and I work very hard to give the children a unique place where they can really learn acting, singing, and dancing, along with the self confidence that comes from performing on stage in front of a large audience.

How did you bring Broadway to San Antonio?
My husband builds the sets and we strive to have youth productions that look like main stage shows, and really give the kids the feeling of starring in a Broadway play.  The kids vary from kids that have never been on stage to those that have been in many productions at our theater and in other theaters.  We strive to meet the challenges of helping each of these kids grow in their training to the best of their individual abilities.

The production Cats just wrapped up. How was the experience for kids?
It's the first time this play has been done as a workshop for community theater with children in San Antonio.  It was very challenging for both the kids and the directors, but everyone grew from the experience.

If costumes and cool sets sound like summer fun to you....check out the upcoming production of Camp Rock workshops.
