SAN ANTONIO -- The nation is honoring war heroes on Memorial Day. In San Antonio, hundreds gathered at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery to mark the occasion.
Memorial Day is set aside to remember the fallen. The living gathered among the graves of the dead to show their respect on Memorial Day.
“People are taking the time to come and recognize the people who have given the ultimate sacrifice, their life, in the defense of our country that we may enjoy the time that we’re having today,” said Kilpatrick Ray, a U.S. Air Force veteran.
Veterans from all branches of the military, families and dignitaries sang, prayed and saluted those who made the ultimate sacrifice for freedom.
“We should keep it up,” commented U.S. Army veteran Pedro Moreno. “We shouldn’t forget our warriors that are out there fighting right now, especially the ones that are not going to make it home.”
On this most solemn of national holidays, San Antonio’s military community paused to remember.
The sea of headstones at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery puts into perspective the enormous price paid by America’s servicemen and servicewomen. The cost of freedom is high.
