Military City U.S.A. just keeps on growing.

Fort Sam Houston is in the process of being transformed into a premier medical complex, thanks to the U.S. military's Base Realignment And Closure initiative.

When the BRAC work is complete, Fort Sam Houston will be the largest medical training campus in the world.

Officials say America's battlefield medics of the future will all have been trained in San Antonio.

The new features include a  a medical instructional facility, housing for students and a dining room that can serve more than 4,000 people.

The project is expected to add about 1,200 jobs to the local economy.

"Those people are going to have a great impact on our economy," said Rear Admiral Commandant Bob Kiser. "They are going to spend money in town and bring their families. So I think it's going to enhance San Antonio and bring an economic benefit to the city."

BRAC rules state that everything must be completed within a year. Officials tell KENS 5 the project is moving along on schedule.
