UPDATE: No signs of head injury to fifth grade boy hit by car near bus

5th grader struck by car boarding bus

WILSON COUNTY, Texas -- There are no signs of a head injury for a North Elementary School fifth grade student who was hit by a car on Highway 181 near Loop 1604 Wednesday, according to the Floresville Independent School District.

Floresville ISD said the car that hit the student had passed the school bus on the shoulder of the highway when the crash happened.

According to Floresville ISD spokeswoman Kim Cathey, a CT Scan on the young boy, identified as Jorge Leija, Jr., shows no signs of a head injury. Cathey has been in touch with the family who says the boy should be heading home Wednesday or Thursday.

"The student is responsive, but in shock, and is currently being airlifted to San Antonio. We ask that our community send prayers for this student and his family," the school district said in a post on its Facebook page.

There is still no word on whether the driver of the car will be charged. The speedy recovery of the young boy could influence whether or not any charges are brought against the driver.

FISD buses were also expected to run late Wednesday morning following the crash, according to the district.
