SAN ANTONIO - A Southwest ISD student beat hundreds of people and landed a spot at a prestigious performing arts school in New York City.
On Thursday, Karina Gutierrez, a senior at Southwest High School, found out about her acceptance to the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
"I was actually with my theatre director, Ms. Driesse and asked me, ‘When do you find out?’ I said, ‘Today.’ I went to her room and I logged in. I read the letter and it said, ‘It's our honor and pleasure to congratulate you to the class of 20-21,’" Gutierrez recalled.
She said that it was a rigorous process to get accepted. She filled out multiple essays, conducted several interviews, and sent an audition tape.
"New York was my No. 1. I really want to go there. I really want to be in the city. That's where I want to be," Gutierrez said.
She said that throughout her high school career, she’s developed her acting skills thanks to her instructors, James Jewell and Kary Driesse. She credits them for helping her succeed.
"I switched off every year. So I had Ms. Driesse and then Mr. Jewell. They were both so different, but I got to learn a lot from both of them," Gutierrez said. "My director, Ms. Driesse, has helped me grow. I think she was one of the most inspirational people who cultivated me in my passion, and she just guided me."
Gutierrez said that her ultimate goal is to be an actress and make Hollywood movies. But she would be happy to be a producer as well.
"I like all the aspects of theatre. I love the backstage, technical aspect. I'm getting my cosmetology license so I can do hair and makeup," Gutierrez said.
Several well-known Hollywood stars attended the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, including Lady Gaga, Alec Baldwin, and Anne Hathaway.
