Nonprofit helps ease financial burden of San Antonio teachers

Teachers Helping Teachers Inc. has a goal of providing San Antonio teachers with an extra $125,000-worth of free supplies.

Teachers are running out of pencils and paper in the classroom and many are spending money out of their own pockets to get what they need to teach. But local nonprofit Teachers Helping Teachers Inc. is helping to ease the burden.

Starting this holiday season, the organization will partner with local schools to provide supplies to teachers in an effort they’re calling SA500.

"We want to serve at least 500 teachers with providing them about $250-worth of supplies so you’re talking about a price tag of about $125,000," said Clarke Mosley with Teachers Helping Teachers Inc.

About 10,000 students across various districts are expected to benefit. The organization is looking to target elementary schools in low-income neighborhoods.

"In some of the districts, the parents are able to pick up some of that slack versus in these other districts where it’s really hitting the teacher the hardest," Mosley noted.

The money will come from corporate sponsors and community members who want to give directly through the nonprofit. Teachers Helping Teachers Inc. plans to provide teachers with the supplies at the beginning of the year and after the holidays.
