Clerk shot in southeast-side gas station robbery

Store clerk shooting

SAN ANTONIO -- A newly hired clerk at a southeast-side Valero gas station was shot during a robbery. San Antonio police said two masked men with guns ambushed the convenience store Monday night.

The incident occurred at the Popular Food Mart located at 1439 E. Southcross. Investigators said two employees and customers were inside of the business during the robbery. A preliminary police report said the victim was manning the cash register.

The report said one of the robbers went behind the counter to demand money from the register. The second thief held the store's door open and told customers to get out.

Investigators say the victim was shot in the side after one of the robbers got the cash from the register. He was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center for emergency surgery. According to police, he remains in critical condition.

SAPD said two men described as Hispanic males in their 20s escaped in a red vehicle and then on foot to a nearby apartment complex on Hackberry.

The store has nearly a dozen surveillance camera which investigators hope will lead to arrests. The culprits will face a charge of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police.
