Barbecue pit used for fundraising stolen from SA church

Police are looking for the thieves who decided to steal from a local church. The suspects didn't take money, but they might as well have.

Thieves recently stole a barbecue pit that’s essential to the church it belongs to because most of the church’s fundraisers center around making food in the pit.

“If you're going to do a fundraiser, one of the most popular things is a plate sale, and one of the most important things is a cooker,” Father Bill Kraus said.

That cooker has been at the center of so many fundraisers for Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church on the city’s southwest side. Money raised from plate sales is not only used for church repairs, but even operations. However, the church is now having to rely on its faith after someone decided to break into the church’s parking lot to steal the pit.

“[The thieves] cut the chain, drove in here, hooked it up, drove back, and left,” Father Kraus said.

The church filed a police report, but Kraus is skeptical the grill will be found or returned. However, he is hopeful something good will come from all of this.

“If I could talk to [the thieves], I would say, ‘You know, this is a pretty negative act, to take from a church. Bring it back and we’ll forgive you.’ That’s what I would say to them,” Kraus said. “And change your ways.”
