SAN ANTONIO - A man was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after authorities said he beat his girlfriend with a handgun he bought her as a gift.
According to an arrest affidavit, the suspect is Ray Nieto Menchaca.
His girlfriend, Karla Alfaro, told the Bexar County Sheriff's Office Monday that Menchaca had also been assaulting her on multiple occasions during the previous week.
The incident reportedly unfolded in the 3400 block of Altius Pass after Alfaro said Menchaca was upset over a protective order she had filed against him.
The affidavit states he started arguing with her and grabbed the 45 cal. handgun. He is accused of waving it at her, accusing her of "going to the gun range with police officers."
Menchaca is accused of hitting her in the back of the head several times, causing a laceration, and punching her in the face repeatedly, causing swelling and bruising.
Alfaro said Menchaca is also the father of her three children. He was eventually arrested after fleeing the scene before law enforcement arrived.
