San Marcos man sentenced to 99 years on 8th DWI conviction

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS - A 64-year-old San Marcos man was sentenced Thursday to 99 years in prison after being found guilty of his eighth DWI.

The Hays County District Attorney’s Office said Jose Marin was previously convicted of DWI in 1983, 1984, 1986, 1990, 1991, and twice in 1998. Marin was sentenced to 33 months in prison for his 1986 conviction and to five years in prison for his 1990 conviction. The two 1998 convictions resulted to prison sentences of 10 and 25 years, but Marin was released in 2003, the district attorney’s office said. Marin was on parole when he was arrested in January 2015 after a Hays County deputy observed him going 75 in a 45 mph zone and weaving.

The jury of nine men and three women deliberated for three hours Tuesday before returning a guilty verdict on Marin. The jury deliberated for nearly six hours before returning the 99-year sentence on him.
