SAN ANTONIO -- A man is dead and two more are clinging to life after a shooting outside a northeast-side dance club early Thursday morning.

San Antonio police said the shooting occurred after a fight in the parking lot at Cowboys Dance Hall, 3030 NE Loop 410, around 2:30 a.m.

Two men were walking two women to their cars when they were allegedly approached by four men in a white pickup. Police said the men got out of the truck and started fighting with the two men.

According to the police report, one of the two men being attacked managed to pull away from the fight.

"I did not want to fight, so I tried to get in my truck and leave," he stated in the police report.

The man told police that one of the men grabbed him by the neck, attempting to pull him out of his vehicle and trying to hit him.  He said that's when he reached for his gun.

"I then grabbed the gun and turned around and shot the guy trying to pull me out of my truck," he told investigators. "Then another guy ran up so I shot him, and then another guy ran up and I shot him.  I felt that my life was in danger and I felt that I was acting in self defense, sir."

In all, three men were hit in the upper torso.

Authorities say 28-year-old Jose A. Jaquez died in the parking lot. The other two men were taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center; one in critical condition, the other in serious condition.

Several people were taken into custody for questioning.

Police said they are still trying to sort out the incident and no charges have been filed.

Police have been called to Cowboys 170 time since 2011. This year, they have worked 75 calls to the club for various issues. They were at Cowboys at around 1 a.m. Thursday, and had just left the scene when the call came in for the fatal shooting.
