They are typically considered punishment for people convicted of drunk driving. But one U.S. congressman has introduced legislation that could put alcohol sensors in all new vehicles.
One of the devices being tested can determine your blood alcohol level by simply touching the steering wheel. Other sensors may be installed above your head or in the head rest and could test perspiration and breath samples.
"There is a tremendous movement led my Mothers Against Drunk Driving and even some in the Federal Government that want to eliminate an American's ability to have a glass of wine at dinner, or a beer at a ball game, or even a champagne toast at a wedding. And then drive home and this technology is their way to do this," says Sarah Longwell with the American Beverage Institute.
A congressman from Maryland wants to spend $40 million to develop alcohol-detection sensors.
The devices could become standard in all vehicles in five to ten years
