Frying a turkey for Thanksgiving is becoming more and more popular each year. Fried turkey lovers say the mean is more moist and has more flavor than roasted turkey.

However, more fires caused by frying turkeys happen in Texas than in any other state, according to State Farm claims data.

The Nation Fire Protection Association says deep-fryer fires result in more than $15 million in property damage each year.

And hot oil splatter can cause serious burns to an adult, or life-threatening injuries to a child.

But you can enjoy a fried turkey if you follow a few safety guidelines:

  1. Don't over-fill the pot.
  2. Turn off the flame when lowering turkey into oil.
  3. Fry outdoors away from the house.
  4. Completely thaw the turkey before frying it.
  5. Have a grease-approved fire extinguisher on hand.
