Bargain hunters can sometimes save a little more if they surf the web. Much to their delight, many retailers are now offering on-line coupons.
All they have to do to find them is have access to a computer and have a little patience.
Eileen Buckley is a bargain hunter who had preferred to shop the old fashioned way, but internet bargains are getting harder to resist for her.
"I just bought two pairs of shoes from Macy's On-line and used the discount," she said after breaking down and buying the shoes on-line.
Twenty percent off plus free shipping made the offer too good to pass up. In fact, the internet is swarming with high tech discounts, if you're willing to take the time to hunt for them.
If you are making an on-line purchase and are in the process of checking out, a box will pop up, asking for a promotion or coupon code.
At that point, if you don't have one, do a web search. For example, if you are shopping at The Gap, search for "Gap free shipping" or "Gap code" or "Gap coupon."
It is often hit or miss. Some codes have already expired and some just don't work.
"It's definitely worth the effort, even if you're successful only a fraction of the time," says Tod Marks of Consumer Reports.
Coupon sites like www.retailmenot.com, help to weed out the losers.
Another strategy is to get the coupons straight from the retailers.
Sign up for their email alerts from your favorite stores.
"They're so high now [at] 10 to 20 percent, that I can't not use them," says Buckley.
You do not have to pay for most codes, so avoid any sites that charge for memberships.
