Cathy Duke has struggled all her life. She was born 18 weeks premature and has cerebral palsy.
She's done quite well though. Duke lives on her own, in an apartment on the west side.
She recently moved into a new place to make life easier. But she says the apartment management changed and so did the promises that were made to her to make the new apartment better handicap accessible.
Since moving in, in September Duke has only be able to take a shower twice. The bars that maintenance put in her shower don't help her get in or out of the shower.
And the bars around the toilet aren't large enough, forcing Duke to go down the street to a fast food restaurant to use the bathroom, because the toilet in her apartment is also too low.
Duke says she's been trying to get the new manager to make the changes she needed, but nothing was being done. So she called us.
After talking with site management, we were promised someone would call...and they did.
We explained the problems and the supervisor promised to call us back. She did and said from what she could see it was all a communications problem.
The manager says Duke misinformed them about what type of bars to place in the apartment and where to locate them. She also immediately corrected the issues.
Management gave Duke the option to either relocate to a handicap accessible apartment that had just opened or they would replace the bars and toilet, to make sure Duke has the facilities she needs to make her life more comfortable.
