S.A. elementary school has no traffic lights or crossing guard

Crosswalk safety at bustling NEISD school

SAN ANTONIO -- Since the kids went back to school, KENS 5 has been looking at safety issues, and North East ISD’s Northern Hills Elementary School is looking for some help.

"It's a lot more busy than people think with traffic,” the neighborhood president said.

Northern Hills Elementary sits at the busy corner of Higgins Road and Uhr Lane. The neighborhood president noted that they asked for a traffic signal, but what they got was stop signs with flashing lights.

"It's awful. People just go through, and I'm surprised there's not more accidents," he said.

KENS 5 talked to principal Randy Barr on a busy morning, and he said that he is working to make the crossing safer.

Last Thursday, he sent a letter to parents explaining that the city, not the school district, provides crossing guards. Since this school hasn't been assigned a guard, Barr said that either he or his staff will be working the intersection as much as possible.

District 10 Rep. Mike Gallagher was also asked to help. The councilman's office said that the school district police have also agreed to work towards a solution. Until then, it's up to parents to teach and follow safety rules.
