Local school's Care Bear project presents gifts to SAPD honoring fallen officers

Students at Briscoe Elementary presented SAPD with special teddy bears in honor of their fallen brothers.

Briscoe elementary students serenaded San Antonio police officers for their annual Care Bear project.

Counselor Michele Bain thanked officers, including the special victims unit, for not only coming but for giving each child personal attention.

As part of the ceremony, children also recognized fallen public servants with a special green bear.

“The green bears were presented for each officer that died in the line of duty,” Chief William McManus noted.

One bear was dedicated to Officer Benjamin Marconi, who was killed last November. Chief McManus also made it a point to include fallen firefighter Scott Deem, who died in the Ingram Square fire.

“Firefighters are part of the family. It was appropriate that he was included as well,” he said.

“The children get an opportunity to collect bears for our SAPD officer that risk their lives for us every day,” Bain said. “All the children have donated these bears. Some of them are gently used and some children saved their own money and bought bears.”
