Floresville honors slain resident Det. Ben Marconi with candlelight vigil

Floresville remembers fallen hero

In Floresville, Black Friday turned blue.

Hundreds gathered to pay their respects to Detective Ben Marconi, who was shot to death on Sunday during a traffic stop.

Among flags and bright lights, Wilson County neighbors turned out for the Marconi family. First responders of every stripe gathered with veterans and kids who turned a dark night blue.

They came to pray and to remember.

“He was always a great man, a great officer. He put his heart and soul into being a police officer,” Wilson County Sheriff Joe Tackitt Jr. said.

Ben’s brother, Tom, spoke for the family at the vigil.

“Had that person who did this had been in trouble and his life was in danger, you know what? My brother would have been the first one if he was right there to try to help that person and save that person without even thinking twice,” he said.

Memorial services for Detective Marconi begin this weekend. There will be a public viewing from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Porter Loring with a rosary to follow.
