Councilman Courage goes for ride along with SAPD

District 9 Councilman John Courage took to the streets on Tuesday with the San Antonio Police Department to better understand the problems plaguing the community.

The area is described as a moderate crime area, but people living there say that property crimes are a real problem and there is so much traffic and speeding, it's dangerous.

"I love the neighborhood, but I don't like the speed," said Dolores Miller, who lives in District 9. "It scares me with the children in the streets."

Road safety is one of many issues Councilman Courage looked to learn more about on the ride along with SAPD.

"The whole idea is providing San Antonio with a fear-free environment," Councilman Courage said.

For four hours, Courage tagged along on a routine patrol to hear more from SAPD about the kinds of calls they regularly respond to, ways they're working to protect the area, and what citizens can do to help. One issue he said his constituents mention often is being targets of property crimes.

"Whether it's their cars being broken into or things being stolen from their truck or it's the homeless that may be breaking into a home in that area, that really worries people," the councilman said. "I want them to know that the SAFFE Officers are out there always looking for these things."

Councilman Courage plans to share what he learned on the ride along with neighborhood associations.

"I hope to encourage more of our people to be involved by joining their own citizens on patrol in their neighborhood," Courage said. "Also to help promote a relationship between the SAFFE Officers and what they do in the community."
