Business owner raising funds to build new First Baptist Church

A local business owner is trying to raise $2.5 million in 30 days to build a new church for First Baptist of Sutherland Springs.

Rebuilding efforts in Sutherland Springs come with the help of a San Antonio business owner. CEO of Beldon Group Companies, Brad Beldon, said that once he saw First Baptist Church up close, he knew he had to do something.

Pastor Frank Pomeroy told leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention that it would be too painful to continue using the church.

"I can't get the images out of my mind," Beldon said.

As a father, he's hurting over the innocent lives taken.

"You went about your day, and they did the same thing," he said. "And their kids are gone. I don't understand."

His plan is to rebuild First Baptist Church. He's working with the former associate pastor, Mark Collins, who is onboard.

"We will build them a facility, a church," Beldon said. "It won't ease the memories, but it will create new memories."

He said that three church members have reached out to him in support.

"I am a believer that the rebuilding has to restart immediately for the healing," he said. "They have to see hope."

In terms of the location, that has yet to be determined. His goal right now is to raise $2.5 million. He has given himself 30 days to raise the funds.

Beldon said that this is about humanity.

"I told the pastor, 'I'm a Jewish roofer,'" he said. "We are coming from all different faiths. Faith has nothing do with this. We are all human beings."

In a little more than 24 hours, Beldon has raised more than $84,000. If you would like to donate, you can visit the official GoFundMe page here.
