BCSO launches first ever Citizens Academy

For the first time ever, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office is offering anyone the chance to learn the inner-workings of the department and what deputies go through every day.

The first class kicked off Tuesday night. The 13 week-long course is to help people better understand law enforcement by going through training on topics like criminal investigations, detention operations, evidence, and firearms.

Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar says that students will even get to complete an entire ride-along shift and take a tour of the county jail.

“I knew coming in as the new sheriff that I wanted to connect with the community in ways that hadn't been done before,” Sheriff Salazar said. “So, having worked with SAPD Citizens Police Academy, I knew, that's just the perfect tool. Sure enough, we're off to a good start. I'm excited about the possibilities."

The course is entirely free. The sign-up opportunity for this round of classes has already passed, but we're told future workshops are in the works.
