UPDATE: Pilot identified in T-38 crash in Del Rio

DEL RIO, TEXAS - One pilot has died and another wounded after an Air Force T-38 Talon crashed around 4 p.m. Monday near Spur 454 and U.S. 90, according to Laughlin Air Force Base.

The military has identified the pilot killed as 32-year-old Capt. Paul J. Barbour. Officials say he was the air crew flight equipment flight commander with the 47th Operations Support Squadron and an instructor pilot with the 87th Flying Training Squadron. He was from Van Nuys, Calif., and is survived by his spouse, mother, father and sister.

The military also identified the injured man as Capt. Joshua Hammervold, an instructor pilot for the 87th FTS. He was transported to Val Verde Regional Medical Center where he was treated for his injuries. He was released on Tuesday and is in good condition.

“We are a close knit family, and when a tragedy like this occurs every member of the U.S. Armed Forces feels it. Our people take top priority, and we are committed to ensuring their safety and security," said Col. Michell Pryor, 47th Flying Training Wing vice commander.

A man living near Amistad Lake nearby said the plane hit a a dry area in the brush, and he heard a "loud boom."
