SAN ANTONIO -- A San Antonio police officer who was hospitalized following an accident earlier this month has died from his injuries, police say.
Edrees Mukhtar died in the hospital on Saturday just before 4:30 p.m. He was 28, and had been with the police department since May 16, 2011.
Sgt. Javier Salazar said in a press release that Mukhtar had been hospitalized on Dec. 10 after wrecking his Ford Crown Victoria in the 3700 block of Medical Drive.
According to an accident report, the officer was responding to a call around 2:40 a.m. when he drove over a patch of running water in the eastbound lane and hit the curb.
The officer's vehicle then spun into oncoming traffic in the westbound lane, where it was struck by a westbound Chevrolet pickup truck that was turning into the Signature Ridge Apartments.
Mukhtar was rushed to University Hospital with "incapacitating injuries," according to the report.
That same day, an SAPD spokesperson told KENS 5 that Mukhtar was talking and had been upgraded to stable condition.
The driver of the pickup truck was treated for minor injuries.
Funeral arrangements for the officer have not yet been announced.
