Now that the gifts are opened, the mad rush to return them begins.
Here are some tips on what you'll need to keep in mind when you head back to the mall.
Wal-Mart has one of the most accommodating return policies in the business. They'll give you a cash refund on any purchase less than $25, no receipt required. If the item you received costs more than $25, Wal-Mart says they'll give you a refund in the form of a gift card.
The return policy at Target is a lot more stringent. They require a receipt fewer than 90-days-old for any exchange or refunds. If your gift-giver included a gift receipt, you'll still only be able to exchange the item for a gift card.
"What about higher end department stores? Macy's says they include return stickers with most of their items. If you have that sticker, you have 180 days to get a full refund. If you don't have a price tag, a return sticker or a receipt, Macy's says they'll refund you the lowest price the item has recently sold for.
Electronics stores, like Best Buy, have complicated return policies. Things like CDs and DVDs aren't likely to be refunded, but big items like TVs might, under the right circumstances.
If you didn't get what you want under the tree this year, the Better Business Bureau say you may be out of luck altogether. It says stores aren't legally required to refund, exchange or credit you for any item unless the store misrepresented the product or it malfunctions.
It's also a good idea to call ahead and check on the store's return and refund policy before you brave the crowds.
