San Antonio's got its giant boots. Could New Braunfels have its beer stein?
Mike Sevel is pitching his giant German mug idea to city leaders.
"We think it'd be an attribute to the city. We think it'd be a landmark. It'd be whimsical and fun and people would like to stop and take a picture next to the giant stein," said Sevel, a retired resident who's been working on the project for 15 months now.
Sevel wants the city to have a visible landmark along Interstate 35 that says "welcome" or "willkommen" to New Braunfels.
Sevel has tapped local artist Brent McCarthy with the preliminary design of the icon.
Sevel's vision is off to a pretty good start. A 22-foot high galvanized steel grain silo from ADM Milling Co. has already been donated.
That's a $12,000 start. The silo's ladder would be modified into the stein's handle. Sevel would like to get the legacy to lager erected in time for the city's popular Wurstfest event next year.
"We just thought we'd be big and bold, and try to be a little bit visionary, and have people say, now, that's different and remember it and remember us," said Sevel.
