Twitter announced Friday that the site had been hacked.
On its blog, the Twitter security team reported that about 250,000 user accounts had been compromised. The hackers, they say, gained access to information like user names and email addresses.
Affected twitter users will receive an email instructing them to reset their passwords. The company encouraged everyone to follow good "password hygiene" by using a combination of upper- and lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols.
The social media giant also announced its intention to work with federal law enforcement to find and prosecute the cyber criminals.
