Toyota is stopping the sale of thousands of its most popular cars because of serious safety issues, including faulty accelerator pedals. Beginning the first week of February, Toyota is halting production at five manufacturing facilities, including the plant in San Antonio. The recall includes more than two million vehicles. The move comes on the heels of another recall, just months ago, Toyota pulled more than four million vehicles, because of the possibility of accelerator pedals becoming lodged under floor mats. It was a problem that may have led to several dangerous, sometimes fatal crashes, including one near Dallas where four people were killed in a 2008 Avalon, after the vehicle could slow down. Toyota officials are not talking about the recall, except that they do not know how long the suspension will last.
