PLANO — Former Alaska governor and GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin's book-signing tour brought her to Texas on Friday, with stops in Plano and also at Fort Hood.

Palin began her day promoting "Going Rogue" at Legacy Books, an independent bookstore on the Dallas North Tollway.

A thousand people lined up starting at 2 a.m. for the event, which was open only to ticket holders who had purchased a copy of "Going Rogue" a month in advance.

Palin arrived right on schedule for the three-hour appearance that started at 11 a.m., waving and smiling as she walked in and went to the second floor.

Ninety-year-old Heloise Ridgway was among the first in line to meet the former governor. She planned to give Palin a homemade quilt. Ridgway was also carrying hand-written notes from Palin's father which she received last summer after she had made a quilt for Palin's son.

"I was so excited to see Trig that I made Trig a quilt and mailed it to her," Ridgway said. "From there, we started corresponding with each other."

From Plano, Palin planned to travel to Fort Hood, attending a private meeting with soldiers and their families to sign books for them.

Her visit comes a month after an Army psychiatrist is accused in a mass shooting spree on the Texas Army post that killed 13 and wounded dozens more.

Palin hasn't been speaking to most reporters during her tightly controlled, stay-on-message book tour.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
