SAN ANTONIO -- An 18-wheeler hauling beer overturned on Sunday, scattering tons of beer cans and halting traffic on two busy highway ramps just north of downtown.

The I-35 southbound exit onto I-10 west was covered in thousands of metallic blue beer cans and boxes as crews hurried to clear the stinky mess.

San Antonio police said the driver took the exit too fast, causing the truck to overturn and spill some of the 7,990 pounds of Bud Light, Natural Light and Busch beer that it was hauling.

The Texas Department of Transportation in San Antonio said on its Twitter account around noon that both the I-35 northbound and southbound ramps to I-10 will be closed for several hours.

Several hours later, around 3:30 p.m., TxDOT said on its Twitter account that the exit ramps would be closed for an additional four hours.

@TxDOTSanAntonio: Major accident update: IH 10 at Finesilver will be closed for an additional 4 hours for cleanup.

The driver, who on his way back to New Mexico, was uninjured.
