GREY FOREST, Texas -- A family featured on a 2012 reality show is dealing with the loss of their beloved estate just one month after losing their mom to cancer.
The Swanderosa, located in the 20400 block of Scenic Loop Road in northwest Bexar County, caught fire around 1 a.m. Wednesday. Firefighters from at least four different departments battled flames for nearly three hours.
The loss of the house is a double tragedy for the Swan family, who was featured in the CMT show "Swanderosa." Judy Swan, the mother of the family, died last month following a battle with cancer. She was 55.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. John Thomas Swan, two daughters and a son.
"It's horrible," said Thomas Swan II, the son. "I mean you just can't catch a break. We're still trying to cope with that and this happens. And now neither me or my dad have anything."
Swan II, who is a Marine, was still home on leave for his mother's funeral.
The family had built up the 18-acre estate as a dream home and dream venue for weddings and other events. The "Swanderosa" show featured the family going above and beyond to satisfy their sometimes bizarre guests.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. However, Swan II said he thinks the overnight lightning storms may have been responsible.
"All the maintenance, everything is always done on that house," he said. "You know, it's an event venue. We keep it in top shape."
Because what remains of the building is still smouldering, arson investigators will not be able to enter the premis until tomorrow.
However, they do believe that the stored ammunition discharged during the fire only intensified the blaze.
According to her obituary, the Swans met while Dr. Swan was in medical school. He is now practices gastroenterology and internal medicine in San Antonio. Judy was working as a labor and delivery nurse when they met.
