SAN ANTONIO -- Denied food stamps back in July, a woman’s second attempt to collect state aid ended in tragedy.
After several hours of a standoff with police, Rachelle Grimmer shot her 10-year-old boy Timothy Grimmer and 12-year-old girl Ramie Grimmer inside Laredo’s state welfare office.
The 38-year-old woman was from Zanesville, Ohio, and had moved to Laredo eight months ago.
Authorities said Grimmer told police she was upset with the Texas Health and Human Services Department, as well as a host of other local and federal agencies that she said had let her down.
That’s when police say Grimmer brandished a gun and took a supervisor hostage. She eventually released him.
Police said Grimmer had been in phone contact with police, but hung up on negotiators shortly before midnight. That’s when officers heard three shots.
The SWAT team moved in and found Grimmer dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound and her two children fighting to stay alive.
Laredo police said the children remain in very critical condition.
Texas Child Protective Services spokeswoman Mary Walker said out-of-state relatives are on their way to University Hospital.
